There are two varieties of collie. The smooth and rough coated The collie is believed to have originated in Northern England and Scotland. It was originally bred as a herding dog. It is a loyal, stable breed when bred well.
Males: 24 to 26 inches at the shoulders.
Females: 22 to 24 inches at the shoulder
Tri, Blue Merle, Sable and White and White.
Rough: Long - soft - dense undercoat. Grooming required is high.
He will "blow" his coat every 6 months, and at that time should be bathed
and combed out until there is no more loose hair. Between blowing times,
shedding is heavy and constant. The dense, soft undercoat will matt if not
Smooth: Short, flat, straight, harsh.
Very friendly and outgoing with dogs or people.
Very loving and loyal.
When well trained are usually trustworthy off lead.
Can be destructive if not properly trained, especially in the area of digging and excessive barking.
Can be very vocal - has a high pitched piercing bark.
Excellent as guard dogs.
Can be trusted with small children.
Usually not difficult to housebreak.
Usually good with other animals.
Reception to Training:
Hip and Elbow displasia, Allergies, Epilepsy, PRA, cataracts.
This breed is an excellent prospect as a family pet.
