The Akita
The Akita is an exceptionally beautiful Japanese breed, originally developed to hunt bear, deer and
wild boar. He is powerful and fearless. His beautiful dense coat protects him
from sub zero weather as well as from intense heat.
Size:
Males: 26 to 28 inches in height at the shoulder. 70 to 90 lbs
Females: 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder.50 to 70 lbs.
Colors:
Any color including white, brindle, or pinto.
Coat:
Medium short - soft - dense undercoat. Grooming required is medium. He will
"blow" his coat every 6 months, and at that time should be bathed and combed out
until there is no more loose hair. Between blowing times, shedding is
constant.
Temperament:
Not usually friendly or outgoing with dogs.
Can be very friendly with people.
Usually not trustworthy off lead.
As a rule, very active and can be destructive when young, especially in the
area of digging.
Very vocal.
Should not be left alone with small children.
Can be difficult to housebreak.
Not usually good with other animals.
Reception to Training:
Not a good candidate for the novice.
Off lead training may be very difficult.
The strong instinct to pull may make on lead training difficult.

Medium high
Health Problems:
Hip & Shoulder Displasia, Allergies, Epilepsy, PRA, cataracts, bloat.
Summary:
This breed is for the serious fancier. It is very vocal, can be destructive and is not usually (there are always exceptions)
receptive to training. This breed can become agressive to the point of being
dangerous in the possession of a novice.
If looking for a Conformation Show dog, this is a very good choice.
If looking for a Pet/Companion Dog, not suggested for the novice.
If looking for an Obedience Dog, not suggested for the novice.
NOTE:
This breed is one that, because of overbreeding, may go from one extreme to the
other. When buying from a reputable breeder these dogs can be loving, loyal
and very trainable. If purchased from a pet store, puppy mill or back yard breeder,
the above description is usually the case. As for temperament, you may be inviting disaster.
