          One of the four varieties of Swiss Mountain Dogs, the Bernese shares similar distinctive coloring with the other varieties, but is the only one of the four to have a long, silky coat. These dogs work as drovers and draft dogs as well as watch dogs.



          Size:
          Males: 25 to 27 inches at the shoulder.
          Females: 23 to 26 inches at the shoulder.

          Colors:
          Tri Colored. The ground color is jet black, markings are rich rust and clear white.

          Coat:
          Thick, moderately long and slightly wavy or straight.

          Temperament:
          Friendly and outgoing with dogs or people.
          Loyal to owner.
          Usually trustworthy off lead.
          Can be quite destructive when young.
          Can be quite vocal.
          Good as guard dogs.
          Very good with children.
          Usually easy to housebreak.
          Usually good with other animals.

          Reception to Training:
          Good.

          Medium

          Health Problems:
          Hip & Shoulder Displasia, Allergies, Epilepsy, PRA, cataracts.

          Summary:
          A playful, friendly dog. Beautiful to look at, easy to groom, usually good with children. The only thing that might detract from his appeal as a family pet is his large size.
