The Shetland Sheepdog originated in the Shetland Islands. It was derived from the collie who was brought over from Scotland. Their job was to herd sheep.
Size:
Males and Females: 13 to 16 inches at the shoulder
Colors:
Black, Blue Merle, Sable.
Coat:
Medium long - soft - dense undercoat. Grooming required is medium. He will "blow" his coat every 6 months, and at that time should be bathed and combed out until there is no more loose hair. Between blowing times, shedding is heavy and constant.
Temperament:
Very friendly and outgoing with dogs or people.
Very loving and loyal.
When well trained are usually trustworthy off lead.
Can be destructive if not properly trained, especially in the area of digging and excessive barking.
Can be very vocal.
Excellent as guard dogs.
Can be trusted with small children.
Usually not difficult to housebreak.
Usually good with other animals.
