The Belgian Malinois was originally bred in Belgium for herding sheep.
They are very intelligent, high energy dogs who react strongly to sudden noises and/or motion. They were bred to work so if left to their own devices, tend to find things to amuse themselves, which their owner might not appreciate..
Size:
Males: 24 to 27 inches in height at the shoulder. 60 to 80 lbs
Females: 22 to 25 inches at the shoulder.40 to 60 lbs.
Colors:
Rich Fawn to deep Mahogany with black tips on the hirs, giving an overlay
appearance. Mask and ears are black. Grey is undesirable.
Coat:
Short - hard. Grooming required is minimal. He will "blow" his coat every
6 months, and at that time should be bathed and combed out until there is no
more loose hair. Between blowing times, shedding is heavy and constant.
Temperament:
Not overly friendly or outgoing with dogs or people.
Not particularly loyal.
When well trained are usually trustworthy off lead.
Can be destructive if not properly trained, especially in the area of digging.
Can be very vocal.
Excellent as guard dogs.
Should not be trusted with small children.
Usually not difficult to housebreak.
Not usually good with other animals.
Temperament can vary from shy to aggressive and everything in between

Excellent candidate.
Energy Level:
Very high
Health Problems:
Hip & Shoulder Displasia, Allergies, Epilepsy, PRA, cataracts.
Summary:
This breed is for the serious fancier. It requires regular work and exercise.
This breed can become aggressive in the
possession of a novice.
If looking for a Conformation Show dog, this is an excellent choice.
If looking for a Pet/Companion Dog, a good choice (experienced owner).
If looking for an Obedience Dog, an excellent choice (skilled trainer).
